John Sweeney is the Founder and Managing Partner of
Momentum Capital Partners, LLC.
John is a nationally recognized expert and industry leader with expertise in investment products and asset management, retirement, lending,
payments and blockchain.
John is the former Chief Operating Officer of Osprey Funds, LLC, a firm that built investment products on digital assets. He was previously the Head of Wealth and Asset Management at Figure Technologies, a San Francisco-based FinTech unicorn startup building Business to Consumer (B2C) financial products on top of a Business to Business (B2B) blockchain called Provenance. In the first 18 months after launch, Figure originated, serviced and securitized $1B of HELOCs all on blockchain. John joined executive team after the B Round and helped grow the company through $20MM secure token offering (STO) and Series C financing of $103MM at a $1.2B valuation.
He managed an investment team running a global macro hedge fund for family office clients and mutual fund liquidity service (ReFlow) for large mutual fund complexes. He led the build out a blockchain based fund administration platform providing transfer agency, custody and ultimately direct share exchange for hedge funds and designed a direct issuance platform to allow municipal governments to issue debt on blockchain.
During his 18 years at Fidelity Investments, John was an Executive Vice President responsible for the spectrum of advice across mutual funds and ETFs, online planning tools, managed accounts, the trust bank and referrals to Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs). John's teams have managed billions of dollars of client assets for hundreds of thousands of clients and they’ve built products and services designed to serve different customers with varying needs, asset levels and service preferences.
John is regularly quoted in the press as an expert on investing, mutual funds, brokerage, and retirement and the application of technology on those industries. He has testified in front of the United States Senate Finance Committee on the Retirement Readiness of Americans and served as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Money Management Institute where he co-founded the Blockchain Finance Forum.
John holds an MBA from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management where he was elected President of his class,
and a BA from the College of the Holy Cross.
Joe is a Partner at Momentum Capital Partners, LLC and a seasoned business strategist, founder and operator with depth in the financial services, Healthtech and Insurtech spaces.
Prior to joining Momentum Capital Partners, Joe was the Co-Founder and President of Fidelity Health Marketplace (FHM), a private health exchange and subsidiary of Fidelity Investments, which serves the health and wellness benefits needs of small and mid-sized employers.
Prior to that role, Joe was Executive Vice President and head of strategy and consulting services for Fidelity Investments, responsible for providing strategy, business development and management consulting services and developing leadership talent for the enterprise. While leading the team, Joe transformed the business, merging it with an operations-improvement group, restructuring its billing model (to become a separate a P&L), and dramatically improving its talent pool.
In addition, Joe extended the group’s role to incubating new business ideas, including HomeCo (a modular home-building company) and FHM.
Before joining Fidelity, Joe was a Principal at AT Kearney Management Consultants where he served as a member of the Organization & Transformation Practice leadership team. Joe was also the director of Knowledge Services for the firm and was responsible for all functions of the group globally, including its 100 knowledge workers across 19 countries, and service center in India. He began his consulting career with AT Kearney after eight years in technical, and direct B2B sales and marketing positions at General Electric Co.
Joe also serves as a mentor to entrepreneurs at the MIT Enterprise Forum, and is actively involved in several non-profits that support inner-city Boston students, including as a Board Member for Tenacity.
He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School and a BS in mechanical engineering from Union College.
